Microbiome 101
Types of microbiome
Your body is home to several microbiomes — each with its own community and role. Pick one to see what it does and how it is tested.
Gut microbiome
The most densely populated place in the body — and the most studied.
Trillions of microorganisms live in your gut — bacteria, fungi, viruses. Together they carry many times more genes than your own and do work your body cannot do alone: they break down fibre, produce vitamins and short-chain fatty acids, and train the immune system.

Your skin's living defence — a thin layer that decides a great deal.
Your skin is not a sterile surface but an ecosystem. The microbes living on it maintain the protective barrier, help hold moisture in and keep unwanted invaders out.

SoonThe first stop of digestion — and a gateway to the whole body.
The mouth is one of the most densely populated microbiome sites in the body. This community takes part in the first steps of digestion and maintains the environment inside the mouth.

The natural protective balance.
The vaginal microbiome is usually dominated by lactobacilli, which maintain an acidic environment — a natural defence against unwanted microorganisms.
